For the first 44 days of 2021 there have been 440 rescues reported through U.S. news reports or fire department press releases. This demonstrates an average of 10 civilians rescued from residential fires through the direct actions of firefighters everyday. 124 of these rescues have been submitted to the Firefighter Rescue Survey with 70% reporting civilian survival. When this 70% survival rate is applied to the full 440 documented rescues, an estimated 308 civilian lives have been saved from working residential fires already in 2021. Our mission (saving lives) must match our metrics (lives saved).
